No touch screen, limited ports, no upgrades possible.Īgain, this may well all be about reliability, but don't sit there telling me it doesn't benefit Apple's bottom line! "Hey, Apple! My 256GB SSD is full! What can I do?" "Well, you could buy this external hard drive, upgrade your storage on iCloud (make sure you save your desktop/documents to the cloud!), and/or trade in your laptop you just bought on a new model. To get similarly specced MacBook Pro, but with only 16GB RAM (cause that's all it supports at present) with 2TB storage, it's gonna cost $2299 out of the gate.

I know it's apples and oranges (ha!) when comparing PC & Mac, or Intel and M1. They might say that this makes their kit more reliable, but it also makes it less repairable as well, and forces those who want more memory or larger storage capacities to pay the "Apple tax." Just for comparison's sake, the following is available from Dell, with a touchscreen and 32GB RAM, and with a 2TB NVMe SSD, It empowered the enduser, whereas Apple continued to shrink and solder. What I mean to say is, that was the appeal of Hackintosh: upgradeability, user selection of customer parts, etc. And yes, you can change the boot drive later in System Preferences in the Startup Disk prefpane. This may very well be the ostensibly stated reason, e.g., soldered components may well in fact be more reliable, but the fact of the matter is that, with both the transition to Intel, and the unserviceability of their kit, Apple effectively empowered the Hackintosh community for a number of years.

You can also hook up the drive externally via USB-SATA and clone or install that way from a currently running OS X system. If you see a box popping up allowing you to choose a wireless network, it's possible. It can take 5 to 10 seconds on machines with mechanical drives. Just turn the machine on and hold the alt key until the bootpicker shows up.

As long as you have done the firmware update at any given point in the past via an OS X system (not 100% sure with the 2010-2011 machines, anything 2012 and newer can do it out of the box), doing an internet 'recovery' OS X installation should be no issue. Having to install Windows via the CD/DVD player is because of some odd restrictions Bootcamp had built in for machines with an optical drive.

How do I burn the ISO on a DVD? Or should I just get a sata to USB cable and just install the OS X to skip all this trouble? Can I boot from the DVD at startup and choose the SSD as a bootdrive later?Ģ. It slipped my mind because I previously dual booted this Mac and found out that I had to install windows using the CD/DVD. My MacBook Pro 13 inch (Late 2011) can only boot from the superdrive. Thank you for the detailed reply! I recently found out something. Again, be careful with the flat cable, it is fragile. You will need a Phillips PH2 screwdriver and a Torx T6.

The drive will come with a plastic lip attached, making it easy to lift the drive out. You do not need to remove the two screws closest to the edge, located next to the drive, they only hold a bracket in place, not the drive. Don't bother disconnecting stuff on the motherboard or removing any other screws! It is not necessary. It's just 10 screws on the bottom case, two screws to loosen the bracket closest to the DVD drive and 4 screws that are in the drive itself. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE REMOVING ANY PARTS for security's sake. Ideally a ESD wrist strap, otherwise touch a big metal object such as a radiator to make sure you're not statically charged. That way you can do a clean install after formatting the drive using the Disk Utility that comes with the recovery.ģ. Then plug in ethernet, or connect to wifi and choose the internet recovery which pops up after a moment. When you're done, power it up, hold the alt (option) key until you see a cursor on a white screen. Be careful with the flat cable with the SATA conncetor, it's fragile. Yes you can just transfer the screws from the old mechanical drive and slot it right in. Out of the two, if similarly priced, I'd go with the Plus.Ģ. I don't personally like either, I'd try to get a Samsung 850 EVO. This will be my first time opening up a laptop. Can I install the SSD straight into the MacBook and do a clean install from a bootable USB instead of cloning the ssd first? I'm not interested in the contents of my hard drive.ģ. Should I get a Sandisk Plus (RM300) or Sandisk Ultra 2 (RM350)?Ģ. I'm planning to switch the mechanical HDD to an SSD.
